The streets of Glasgow have once again transformed into the backdrop of a Marvel blockbuster, as filming kicks off for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the next chapter in Tom Holland’s journey as the web-slinger. The production began in the Scottish city on Friday, turning parts of the city centre into a stand-in for an American metropolis.
Fans got a glimpse of Holland in costume on Sunday, filming an action sequence before taking time to greet a crowd of nearly 100 onlookers. With large sections of Glasgow cordoned off, city authorities have issued warnings about road closures and disruptions.
This marks Holland’s second film in Scotland in recent weeks and he was recently spotted working on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey across Inverness and Moray. But beyond the shoot itself, Brand New Day is building major buzz for its all-star cast.
Fourteen years after first debuting in The Avengers, Mark Ruffalo is stepping back into the role of Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk. Rumors of his return had swirled for months but were only confirmed as the script finalized and production locked in. Ruffalo, a staple of the MCU with appearances in Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Ragnarok, and Disney+’s She-Hulk, now brings his gamma-powered alter ego into the Spider-Man universe for the first time.
Joining him is Jon Bernthal, returning as the Punisher, which will be his first big-screen portrayal of the character since 2008’s Punisher: War Zone, where Ray Stevenson took on the mantle. Bernthal’s vigilante Frank Castle enters the MCU’s theatrical lineup for what’s expected to be a fiery crossover.
Rounding out the villains is Michael Mando, reprising his role as the Scorpion. He last appeared in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming in a brief yet memorable scene. Mando, known for his critically acclaimed role as Nacho Varga in Better Call Saul, returns to inject more danger into Holland’s New York.
This hero-heavy ensemble echoes the tradition set by previous Spider-Man entries, where Holland’s Peter Parker has teamed up with heavyweights like Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). The team-up energy harks back to Marvel’s Team-Up comics from the ’70s and ’80s, and Brand New Day seems poised to follow suit—with a twist.
While plot details are under wraps, expect the usual Marvel clash-before-camaraderie dynamic. Spider-Man, Hulk, and Punisher are all expected to cross wires—if not fists—before a larger threat unites them.
Destin Daniel Cretton directs the film, with the trusted duo of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers returning to write the script. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is slated for a 31 July, 2026 release.
