Nearly two decades after Bhagam Bhag became a cult favourite for its slapstick humour and memorable performances by Akshay Kumar, Govinda and Paresh Rawal, the popular comedy franchise is set to return with a sequel but this time with a refreshed cast and creative direction.

According to an exclusive report by Variety India, Manoj Bajpayee has come on board for Bhagam Bhag 2, stepping into the role previously played by Govinda. He joins Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in the sequel, which is expected to retain the spirit of the original while introducing a new storyline driven by mistaken identities, comedy of errors and escalating chaos. Shooting is scheduled to begin next month in Mumbai.

The film will also feature Meenakshi Chaudhary as the female lead opposite Akshay Kumar. Known for her work in Guntur Kaaram, The Greatest of All Time, Lucky Bhaskar and Sankranthiki Vasthunam, Chaudhary will be making her return to Hindi cinema after her debut in Upstarts. Discussions are currently underway to finalise actresses for roles opposite Bajpayee.

Taking over the director’s chair from Priyadarshan is Raaj Shaandilya, who has made a mark in commercial comedy with the Dream Girl franchise. Shaandilya is expected to blend his contemporary sensibility with the essence of the original, while adding elements of suspense to the comedy.

Priyadarshan, who directed the 2006 film, is not associated with the sequel as he is currently committed to multiple projects with Akshay Kumar, including Bhoot Bangla, Haiwaan and Hera Pheri 3.

Akshay Kumar is expected to begin work on Bhagam Bhag 2 after completing his ongoing schedule for Anees Bazmee’s upcoming comedy. He will then move on to Golmaal 5, directed by Rohit Shetty and starring Ajay Devgn.

With a new leading trio, a fresh storyline and a director known for mass entertainers, Bhagam Bhag 2 is shaping up as one of the most anticipated comedy sequels in recent years.
