Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of God of War is steadily shaping its mythological universe, adding several major characters around lead Ryan Hurst’s Kratos as the series moves into pre-production in Vancouver under a two-season order.
The latest addition is Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, who will portray Thor who is the formidable God of Thunder. Described as a warrior haunted by his past, Thor is a battle-scarred giant whose loyalty to Asgard once defined him but whose memories now drive him toward isolation and alcoholism. Despite emotional distance from his family, his destructive power remains dangerously close to the surface.
Ólafsson joins Hurst, who leads the show as Kratos and previously portrayed Thor in PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök, earning a BAFTA nomination.
The series, written and showrun by Ronald D. Moore, centers on a deeply personal journey rather than just divine warfare.
Teresa Palmer has been cast as Phoebe/Sif , Thor’s wife and the goddess of family who brings emotional grounding to the turbulent Norse household. The character connects directly to Thor’s internal struggle and fractured relationships.
Max Parker rounds out the core pantheon as Heimdall, the Watchman of Asgard and son of Odin. “The Watchman of Asgard, and one of the sons of Odin. Heimdall is a god in his own right with the special ability to anticipate what’s about to happen at any moment. Handsome and dynamic, he feels unappreciated by his father and underestimated by the rest of the family, and as a result Heimdall is constantly looking for ways to improve his position in the hierarchy and increase his stature and power,” he said.
As previously reported, the story adapts the narrative of the two most recent games, following Kratos raising his young son while navigating conflicts with the Norse gods.
The series revisits the franchise’s tragic protagonist and his violent legacy.
Kratos, the titular character of the entire franchise, is Spartan by birth and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in the service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle.
God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, with Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon also executive producing. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis co-executive produce. With its central family drama and a growing roster of Norse gods, Prime Video’s God of War is positioning itself less as a straightforward fantasy spectacle and more as an intimate character-driven epic about legacy, grief and fatherhood.
