Universal Pictures is bringing its iconic adventure franchise back to life, confirming that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will return for a fourth installment of The Mummy, scheduled for a wide theatrical release on May 19, 2028.

The actors have finalized deals to reprise their fan-favorite roles as adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell, reuniting on screen for the first time in the series since The Mummy Returns. Weisz notably did not appear in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, making her comeback particularly significant for longtime audiences. Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps.

The franchise originally roared to success with the 1999 reboot, which followed a treasure hunter who inadvertently awakens a cursed Egyptian priest with supernatural powers. The film and its 2001 sequel became major global hits, revitalizing Universal’s classic monster legacy and establishing Fraser as a leading action star.

The new film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence, working from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. Longtime franchise producer Sean Daniel returns after overseeing every entry in the $1.8 billion-grossing series, including The Mummy Returns, The Scorpion King, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and the 2017 Dark Universe attempt. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein also produce through Project X Entertainment.

Fraser will additionally serve as an executive producer alongside Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart, while Universal executives Jay Polidoro and Jacqueline Garell oversee development for the studio.

With its original leads back in place and a new creative team behind the camera, the studio is aiming to recapture the swashbuckling adventure tone that defined the franchise’s early success nearly three decades ago.
