Warner Bros is bringing Stephen King’s The Mist back to screens with a new adaptation that reunites the studio with filmmaker Mike Flanagan, who will write and direct the project based on the author’s 1980 novella.

Flanagan will also produce through his Red Room banner alongside Tyler Thompson and Spyglass executives Gary Barber and Chris Stone, with Alexandra Magistro serving as executive producer.

The story centers on a Maine town engulfed by a mysterious fog from which deadly creatures emerge, forcing a group of survivors to shelter inside a grocery store. As the crisis intensifies, fear fractures the community and social order collapses, with paranoia and mob mentality turning some people into threats as dangerous as the monsters outside.

Originally published in King’s Skeleton Crew collection, The Mist has previously been adapted into a 2007 feature film and a 2017 television series. The new version marks the latest collaboration between Flanagan and King, following Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck. Flanagan is also developing a miniseries adaptation of King’s first novel Carrie for Prime Video.

The project continues Flanagan’s long-running association with King’s work while revisiting one of the author’s most psychologically charged horror stories for a new generation of audiences.
