Apoorva Lakhia’s upcoming film Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, inspired by the 2020 India-China military clash in the Galwan Valley, is undergoing significant changes as the makers revisit its narrative and scale.
The film, which stars Salman Khan as late Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu, initially began shooting in Ladakh in September 2025 and was reportedly close to completion by December. However, the project has since entered an extended phase of reshoots, with fresh filming underway in Mumbai since February 2026.
According to reports, the team has planned nearly 40 days of additional shooting, incorporating new sequences aimed at reshaping the film’s storytelling. These additions are expected to significantly alter the tone and direction of the project from its earlier version.
Among the key changes is the inclusion of a Chinese-language song, to be composed by Himesh Reshammiya. The track is expected to feature Salman Khan and will be filmed once it is finalised and recorded.
The creative shift is reportedly influenced by evolving geopolitical developments. With a cautious easing in relations between India and China, the makers are said to have reworked the narrative to approach the subject with greater sensitivity. Instead of focusing solely on the conflict, the revised storyline is expected to highlight broader themes such as peace, harmony and the human cost of war.
Given the sensitivities surrounding the Galwan Valley clash, the film’s updated approach reflects an attempt to balance historical context with a more nuanced and reflective perspective.
With its revised title, newly added sequences and a reoriented thematic focus, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace is shaping up to be markedly different from its original conception.
