MGM+ and the BBC have released the first-look images from their upcoming four-part drama adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel A Tale of Two Cities, offering an early glimpse into the period series set to air in the United States and the United Kingdom.
The limited series stars Kit Harington, François Civil and Mirren Mack in lead roles, bringing to life the iconic characters of Sydney Carton, Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette. The adaptation is written by Daniel West and directed by Richard Clark.
Set in London in 1782, against the backdrop of rising tensions between France and Britain, the story follows Lucie Manette, whose life takes an unexpected turn when she learns that her father, believed dead for nearly two decades, may still be alive in Paris. The message is delivered by Charles Darnay, an idealistic French émigré, who is soon arrested and charged with treason.
In a bid to save him, Lucie turns to Sydney Carton, a brilliant yet unpredictable lawyer. As the story unfolds, their intertwined lives lead to a complex love triangle between Lucie, Darnay and Carton, with both men vying for her affection. Their relationships evolve against a backdrop of political unrest, personal sacrifice and emotional conflict, binding them together through a series of dramatic events including love, loss, and violence.
The series is produced by Federation Stories in co-production with Federation Studio France and Thriker Films for MGM+ and the BBC. Polly Williams and Sarah Best serve as executive producers for Federation Stories, with Léo Becker representing Federation Studio France, and Kit Harington and Daniel West executive producing for Thriker Films.
