One of 2019’s most anticipated Indian film releases, Gully Boy, is set to receive its World Premiere at Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 2019. Selected by the festival, the Gala Screening will take place on Saturday 9th February at the prestigious Friedrichstadtpalast, welcoming on the Red Carpet lead actors and two of India’s most celebrated A-list artists, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt; director Zoya Akhtar; and producer Ritesh Sidhwani. The film is co-produced by Farhan Akhtar.
Inspired by the underground rap scene in Mumbai, Gully Boy has already garnered worldwide buzz among audiences ahead of its release in India and overseas. The trailer and music have created an unprecedented euphoria, making it one of the most anticipated Indian films of 2019. One of India’s most coveted stars, Ranveer Singh, plays the lead in this underdog story set in the slums of Dharavi. He essays an ambitious, budding rapper for which he trained for nine months professionally.
In addition to acting, Singh recorded the songs for the soundtrack himself. Audiences worldwide have unanimously lauded the actor’s rapping skills witnessed in the teaser, trailer and the recently released first song of the film. The first song generated a staggering 15 million views on YouTube within two days, while the first two tracks have gone viral on social media, especially among youth audiences, the prep videos, star spottings and innovative marketing activations creating even more curiosity.
Fellow A-list artist and powerhouse actress Alia Bhatt portrays Singh’s unconventional love interest in the film. One of the most critically lauded and commercially successful new gen actress of Indian cinema, Alia makes a welcomed return to Berlinale following the premiere of her second film, Highway, in 2014, her performance generating unanimous plaudit from audiences and critics alike. The film also features seasoned artists Siddhant Chaturvedi and Kalki Koechlin in pivotal roles.
