Mulan Trailer Has Us Shook!

The trailer for ‘Mulan’ (2020) has finally dropped – and it looks better than ever!

Disney have released the first glimpses of the highly anticipated live-action remake of ‘Mulan’ (1998). Liu Yifei will be playing the title role of the strong Mulan who takes the place of her sick father in the army. As with all of the remakes, there are some changes that we can already see within the trailer which looks a grand deal more epic and big-screen than its animated counterpart. That’s all down to the director, Niki Caro, who directed ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife’ (2017).

The trailer debuted during halftime at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and it showcases all of the heart-stopping action sequences that we have to look forward to. Liu looks extremely suited to the role as we can see that she has expert sword skills which juxtaposes with her softer side as we see her reaction to her mother telling her that the matchmaker has found her an ‘auspicious’ match. In comparison to the fierce warrior we see later in the trailer, a more gentle Mulan pays respect to her mother by repeating the famous lines from the song, “Yes, I will bring honour to us all.”

However, a reference is the closest that we are going to get to the old songs from the original as this isn’t going to be a musical. It may be that the music will feature over the top as a soundtrack rather than being sung by the characters themselves but we can’t say for certain yet.

The trailer did keep some cards from the table, however, as we still haven’t had a glimpse of Mushu or Cri-Kee. We do know from earlier spoilers that Li Shang won’t be a character in this film, much to the dismay of some fans. Hopefully they will make up for the hole that he left when it releases in cinemas on the 17th of March, 2020.
