For those of you who use Twitter, you will have seen that #JusticeforJohnnyDepp is trending. This is due to a leak of an audio recording of Amber Heard who admitted to initiating physical fights with ex-husband Johnny Depp. Over the past few years, there has been an on-going back and forth between the pair which the media has been heavily involved in – both accused the other of domestic violence. Depp has since filed a $50 million lawsuit against Heard, accusing her of defamation of character. Once the allegations reached the media, Depp’s career has taken a hit from it as he was dropped from his role in Disney’s popular franchise Pirates of the Caribbean. The audio recording from 2015 was picked up by the Daily Mail and has since given weight to Depp’s accusations that it was in fact Heard that was the abusive one in the relationship. Heard admitted to ‘hitting’ Depp and throwing pots and pans at him. The discovery of what has happened has opened up the conversation of cancel culture, domestic violence against a man and the effects that the media can have on the careers of those that they report on. Many have risen to show their support to Depp from the industry and it cane only be hoped that after the years of trouble he has suffered because of this, he will begin to reclaim his life. “I have been in recovery circles of many kinds and stories of men receiving abuse are far too common. Johnny Depp is sadly not an isolated case. No matter your gender you deserve to be safe from abuse be it emotional or physical.” – Jesse Zook MannWhether the revelation of this information will change Disney’s opinion on releasing Depp from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has yet to be seen but we will be posting updates on the case as it arises.
