Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite made history on Sunday night at the 92nd Academy Awards where it won four awards, including the highly coveted ‘Best Picture’ award. It is the first foreign language film to have done so and is the first South Korean film to win ‘Best International Picture’. The category had just been renamed from ‘Best Foreign-Language Film’.
I’m so happy to be its first recipient under the new name. I applaud and support the new direction that this change symbolises. All our loving crew members and cast members are here with us. The thriller was nominated for six awards in total including ‘Best Original Screenplay’ which it also won. Bong Joon Ho wrote the script alongside Jin Won Han – the wins were a delight for the director whose previous work includes Snowpiercer, Okja and many more.
Parasite is the tale of a poor Korean family infiltrating into the home of the wealthy Park family. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and has since been acclaimed throughout the awards season.
