Indian classical singer and music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan died on Tuesday in Kolkata at the age of 55. The renowned vocalist is survived by a wife, two sons, and a daughter. He was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata for prostate cancer treatment in November 2023.

“We tried our best but failed. He passed away at around 3:45 PM,” said a hospital official where Khan was admitted, reported The Telegraph.

Khan was the great-grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan and belonged to Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, which was founded by his great-grandfather.

After the news of Khan’s demise, Kolkata Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited his family members in the hospital and later took to social media to express her grief. Banerjee described the classical singer as one of the “greatest exponents of Indian classical music of our times”.

“I heard about his death. This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can’t believe that Rashid Khan is no more,” said Banerjee at the hospital while visiting Khan’s family members.

The chief minister also announced that Khan’s last rites would be performed with state honours and a gun salute.

Khan was born in Uttar Pradesh’s Badayun village in 1968. He took his initial music training from his maternal grand-uncle Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, and moved to Kolkata with him in 1980.
