An FIR has been filed against ‘Jawan’ star Nayanthara for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus in her recent film ‘Annapoorani’ that was released in theatres on 1st December 2023. The film was removed from Netflix, a week after it started streaming, after it faced severe backlash. According to reports, Madhya Pradesh’s right-wing outfit Hindu Sewa Parishad filed the FIR, alleging that the film disrespected Lord Ram and promoted ‘love jihad’ through the movie. Ramesh Solanki, the founder of the Hindu IT cell, complained that the film is “offending Hindu religious sentiments”. The FIR includes the name of the film’s debutant director Nilesh Krishnaa and producers Jatin Sethi and R Ravindran and Punit Goenka, Monika Shergill, Netflix India content head, and Zee Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel. Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) spokesperson Shriraj Nair warned Netflix to take down the film. He shared a clipping from the film on X and wrote, “We are strictly warning you @NetflixIndia to immediately withdraw this evil movie of yours or else be ready to face legal consequences and @BajrangDalOrg style action. @ZeeStudios_ (sic).” Annapoorani’s story follows the story of a girl of the same name as the title, who belongs to a conservative Brahmin family from Tamil Nadu’s Srirangam and wishes to become a top chef in India. However, she faces challenges while pursuing her passion and feels trapped between orthodox ideals due to caste and religious preferences.
