Arsenal Women signed United States Women’s National Team defender Emily Fox on a permanent deal, the Women’s super league (WSL) club announced Thursday. The 25-year-old Fox has appeared 39 times for the USWNT and also started all four of their 2023 Women’s World cup matches. The right back earlier played for the North Carolina Courage, where she appeared 19 times for the club. Talking about the move, Fox said, “It feels amazing to have signed here.” “When I think of Arsenal, I think of excellence, I think of a global organisation, I think of family. I think of pushing the standards of football and especially in the women’s game,” she added. “It’s a huge honour to get the opportunity to represent this club and I’m excited to get started and play in front of our supporters,” Fox continued. In the WSL standings, Arsenal stand third, three points behind toppers Chelsea. Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall said, “We’re delighted to bring Emily to Arsenal and I’m sure our supporters will join me in welcoming her to our club. Emily has shown impressive development over recent seasons and her strengths in both phases will make her an important addition to our squad. At international level, the experience she’s built up gives her an excellent foundation to make the transition to English football.” Fox will don the number two jersey for Arsenal. Fox can play on either side of the defence, adding depth to the squad in the full-back department. The Gunners are still raring for the elusive trophy even though they lost right-back Noelle Maritz to Aston Villa earlier this month and have Laura Wienroither sidelined with an ACL injury she suffered at the end of last season. Having said that, it is important to note that Arsenal will lose Fox’s service for several weeks when the USWNT play in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup, which starts on February 20. Fox made his United States international debut back in 2018, while she was still in college. She will become the third USWNT player to play for Arsenal in the WSL, following in the footsteps of Heather O’Reilly and Tobin Heath.
