Emmerdale and Hollyoaks actress Georgina Hale died at the age of 80. While the cause of her death is yet to be ascertained, reports suggest that she died on January 4.
Tributes from BAFTA and the entertainment industry poured in for the star, celebrating her five-decade long career in film, TV, and theatre.
In a social media post on X, BAFTA said, “We’re saddened to learn of the passing of Georgina Hale”.
“Well known for her award-winning work in the films of Ken Russell, she was awarded Most Promising Newcomer To Leading Film Roles in 1975,” it said.
Filmmaker Jude Rawlins wrote on X, “I am heartbroken that we have lost the magnificent Georgina Hale. She was the greatest and I once told her so on a bus in Swiss Cottage. I wrote a part in my next film for her. No idea who else could do it.”
Born in Ilford, Essex, Hale was best known for her roles in Ken Russell films during the 1970s. The actress took training at RADA and started her acting career with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1965.
One of her most acknowledged work was 1974 film Mahler, a biopic of music composer Gustav Mahler, where she portrayed the character of Alma, for which she won the BAFTA award.
Besides working in films and stage performances, Hale appeared in several TV operas. She played Beryl Chugspoke in Emmerdale in 2006 and Blanche Longford in Hollyoaks in 2010-11.
