The Emmys awards telecast witnessed a record low audience as only 4.3 million viewers watched Monday night’s ceremony on Fox, as per early Nielsen data, Deadline reported. While other award ceremonies have managed to slightly bounce back after the coronavirus pandemic low, the Emmys can’t catch a break.

4.5 million viewers mean that there’s a significant decrease from last year’s previous all-time low when less than 6 million people watched the award show on NBC. During last year, the viewers were also down 37% from the last time it aired on Fox in 2019. That time around the audience rating was recorded at a historic low of 6.9 million.

“All of the above were much lower than the last Monday night ceremony in 2018, when NBC raked in 10.17M viewers,” Deadline reported.

However, Fox is still labeling it as a win because the ceremony marks the network’s most-watched Monday unscripted telecast in more than eight years, excluding sports. It is also the most-watched Monday entertainment program in more than 18 months.

It is to be noted that these numbers aren’t final. Nielsen’s final numbers for the show will be available tomorrow. It is estimated that the numbers will be slightly higher than these totals, however, the numbers will not be enough to beat the unwanted record of record low.

The award ceremony had to be moved to January due to Hollywood’s dual strikes last year, but it still had to compete against the NFL for primetime eyeballs. During the NFL, the Eagles lost to the Buccaneers in the wild card round, which was hands down a highly-watched match.

The Iowa caucuses were also on Monday night. Even though the coverage ended early, it is bound to steal some viewership from the first hour or so of the show.

The 75th Emmy Awards saw The Bear, Succession and Beef dominate in the top categories. HBO led all networks with nine wins at the award show at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. It was followed by Netflix and FX with six each. Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach swept the award season, and so did Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin.
