The National Theatre is gearing up for an exciting summer season with a lineup of captivating productions across its South Bank stages. From acclaimed adaptations to Pulitzer Prize-winning comedies, audiences can expect a diverse array of performances to enthrall and inspire. Leading the pack is James Graham’s powerful new adaptation of Alan Bleasdale’s seminal TV show, “Boys from the Blackstuff,” making its Olivier stage debut. Directed by Kate Wasserberg and featuring original cast members, this production promises to be a poignant exploration of contemporary themes. Meanwhile, Complicité returns to the National Theatre after five years with a reworking of their timeless classic, “Mnemonic”. Conceived by Simon McBurney, this thought-provoking piece delves into memory, origins, and migration, offering a unique theatrical experience. In the Lyttelton theatre, audiences will be treated to Frank Galati’s Tony Award-winning adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath,” directed by Carrie Cracknell. With Cherry Jones in the starring role of Ma Joad, this production is set to captivate audiences with its powerful storytelling. Finally, Katori Hall will make her National Theatre mainstage debut with “The Hot Wing King” in the Dorfman Theatre. Directed by Roy Alexander Weise, this Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy promises to bring a taste of Memphis’ culture and cuisine to the stage. Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre, expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, highlighting the collaborative spirit that drives their work. With a focus on flexibility and accessibility, the National Theatre continues its pilot program with limited 6.30pm GMT performances, offering audiences more options to enjoy their evening. Tickets for all productions go on sale to the public on 8th February, marking the beginning of what promises to be an unforgettable summer at the National Theatre.
