Director-producer Suparn S Varma is gearing up for his next project—a film centered around the controversial and significant court case of the Shah Bano Begum case. Suparn S Varma is known for backing successful web shows, including ‘The Family Man,’ ‘Rana Naidu,’ ‘The Trial,’ and ‘Sultan Of Delhi,’ along with the well-received film ‘Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai’. The Shah Bano Begum vs Mohd. Ahmad Khan case, also known as the Shah Bano Begum case, stands as a pivotal moment in post-independence India. Originating in 1978, the case was brought forth by Shah Bano, then a 62-year-old woman, after her husband Mohd. Ahmad Khan divorced her. She sought maintenance for herself and her five children under Section 123 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. Shah Bano emerged victorious, sparking widespread controversy as some believed the judgment clashed with Islamic law. The case ignited a national debate on the issue of having separate civil codes for different religions in India, a discussion that persisted over four decades after the verdict was delivered. Suparn S Varma has finalized the script and is currently in the process of assembling the cast and crew for his upcoming project. The filmmakers are optimistic about the significance of a film based on the Shah Bano Begum case for today’s audience, highlighting its portrayal of women empowerment in its true essence.
