Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas passed away today after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed in an official statement. He was 73.

“With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February due to a prolonged illness. Udhas family,” read the statement.

The singer died at 11 AM today at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. According to reports, he was diagnosed with cancer a few months back. The singer’s last rites will be performed on Tuesday, 27th February.

Born in Gujarat on 17th May 1951, Pankaj Udhas began his career at a young age, taught by his family deeply involved in music.
He captivated audiences for more than four decades. During the early stage of his career, Udhas sang for Hindi films and even dabbed in Indian pop.

Eventually, he found his calling in ghazals, and soon became Gazal ustad. The first ghazal album by Udas was “Aahat,” marking the beginning of a iconic career. He has released over 60 solo albums and numerous collaborative projects throughout his musical journey.

Udhas’ dedication to his craft has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Ghazal Singing, and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor.
