Nikki Haley, the former United Nations ambassador won the Washington, D.C. primary, marking a significant milestone in her bid for the party’s nomination. Haley made the victory with 62% of the vote, surpassing former President Donald Trump’s 33% share. Despite the relatively low voter turnout of just over 2,000 in the heavily Democratic city, Haley managed to secure all 19 delegates up for grabs.

Haley’s win in the D.C. primary makes her a formidable contender as she sets her sights on further wins in the upcoming 15 primaries and caucuses scheduled for Tuesday. However, Trump remains the frontrunner, expected to amass a substantial number of delegates, inching closer to securing the nomination later in the month.

Currently, Trump holds 244 delegates, while Haley trails behind with 43, with 1,215 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Haley’s victory in the Republican primary makes her the first woman to achieve such a feat within the party. In response to her unexpected win, Trump’s campaign issued a press release dubbing Haley the “queen of the swamp,” while Haley continued her campaign efforts in Maine, one of the states holding its primary on Tuesday.

Washington, D.C., known as one of the bluest areas in the country, overwhelmingly supported Joe Biden in the 2020 general election, with Biden securing more than 92% of the vote in the district.
