Austin Stowell cast as young Gibbs in ‘NCIS: Origins’

Austin Stowell has been selected to portray Mark Harmon’s iconic NCIS character Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Deadline reported. Stowell has been cast as young Gibbs in CBS‘ new drama NCIS: Origins, which is a prequel and has a straight-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcast season. The newer project will be produced by CBS Studios.

Harmon has been given the narration duties. The new series begins in 1991, years before the events of NCIS, and showcases Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ younger years. In the series, Gibbs (Stowell) starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.

Mark Harmon and his son, Sean Harmon, who played Gibbs in flashbacks on NCIS and played a key role in the prequel, serve as executive producers. They collaborate with David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, who co-write the premiere episode and jointly manage the show as co-showrunners.

Origins is the newly greenlighted project that is added to the CBS Studios’ growing NCIS franchise, along with a Europe-set Tony & Ziva spinoff starring Michael Weatherly and Cote De Pablo for Paramount+. They join the mothership series, now in its 21st season, NCIS: Hawai’i, now in Season 3 and the franchise’s first international installment, NCIS: Sydney.

Stowell’s television career extends to projects such as “A Friend of the Family,” “Public Morals,” and the upcoming “Three Women.” In films, he has appeared in “Battle of the Sexes,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Whiplash,” “Swallow,” and the horror reboot of “Fantasy Island.” Additionally, he stars opposite Lucy Hale in the romantic comedy “The Hating Game,” a project on which he also served as an executive producer.
