BBC acquires Suits, most-watched show on Netflix last year

Suits, the most-watched legal drama on Netflix last year has been acquired by the BBC, who has also bought titles from NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution for BBC iPlayer including St. Denis Medical and The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

Suits is a drama about a law firm in New York City. It stars Patrick J. Adams (Old School) as Mike Ross, who uses his photographic memory to talk his way into a job as an associate working for successful ‘closer’ Harvey Spector, played by Gabriel Macht (Love & Other Drugs). The show featured Meghan Markle in the earlier season.

After Netflix snapped up Suits last year, it recorded a mindblowing 57.7 billion minutes of viewing — the highest year-end total for streaming US ratings body Nielsen had ever recorded.

Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, said: “This is a really exciting and enjoyable trio of star-studded series: the hotly-anticipated comedy, St. Denis Medical, the sassy, romantic comedy-drama, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, and the smart and stylish legal drama, Suits. We couldn’t be more delighted to bring them all to BBC viewers.”

St. Denis Medical is a new NBC workplace comedy set in an underfunded and understaffed Oregon hospital. At St. Denis Medical Centre, the dedicated doctors and nurses are trying their best to treat patients whilst maintaining their own sanity.

The series stars Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Allison Tolman (Fargo), Josh Lawson (Superstore), Mekki Leeper (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Kaliko Kauahi (Superstore), Kahyun Kim (9-1-1), and David Alan Grier (The Color Purple).

Based on the eponymous Universal film franchise written and directed by Malcom D. Lee, Peacock’s The Best Man: The Final Chapters catches up with Harper, Robyn, Jordan, Lance, Quentin, Shelby, Candace, and Murch.
