At least nine people are dead after a 7.4 magnitude of earthquake hit Taiwan, according to fresh update by the government. Taiwan was rocked by its most powerful earthquake in 25 years, measuring 7.4 in magnitude, causing widespread devastation and claiming lives. According to reports more than 700 people are injured and officials fears that the death toll may rise as rescuers race against time to reach those trapped under collapsed buildings. Soon after the earthquake, a tsunami alert was issued on Wednesday morning in Japan. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 18km south of Hualien city, according to the US Geological Survey. The remote, mountainous region of Hualien bore the brunt of the earthquake’s force, experiencing massive landslides that have caused significant damage, likely taking weeks to repair. The impact of the earthquake was felt as far as the capital city of Taipei, with videos circulating online showing buildings swaying violently as tremors rippled through the island. Rescue efforts are underway, but rescuers are facing extreme challenges due to unstable buildings and ongoing aftershocks. Su Ching-hui, an official from the local fire department, emphasized the perilous conditions faced by rescue teams, said, “Whenever our team moves, the building becomes unstable and they have to find something to hold on to ensure their safety before pulling people out,” reported Reuters.
