Rishi Sunak resigns as Conservative leader following Labour’s landslide election victory

“I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all,” said Sunak adding “But you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgement that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss.”

Expressing his gratitude, he said, “I am honoured to have been your prime minister, this is the best country in the world.” The election results marked a historic defeat for the Conservatives, who lost more seats than in any previous election, as many constituencies shifted to Labour. Sir Keir Starmer claimed victory early Friday morning, proclaiming that the UK has “the opportunity after 14 years to get its future back.”

After securing his seat in Richmond, North Yorkshire, Sunak conceded defeat, describing the night as “sobering.” He acknowledged Labour’s victory and congratulated Sir Keir Starmer, said, “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss.”

Following his resignation speech, Sunak and his wife, Akshata, departed Downing Street for Buckingham Palace, where he formally tendered his resignation to the King. A spokesperson for the King confirmed, “His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.”

Sunak emphasized the importance of the Conservative Party rebuilding and effectively taking on its role in opposition. In his speech, he reflected on his tenure, highlighting achievements such as bringing inflation “back to target,” reducing mortgage rates, and returning growth to the economy. He also noted the Conservative Party’s efforts in enhancing the UK’s global standing, supporting Ukraine, and fostering new transformative technologies. Additionally, he mentioned strengthening the United Kingdom through the Windsor Framework and restored devolution in Northern Ireland.
