Jeremy Corbyn has been re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Islington North. He was running as an independent candidate. The former Labour leader secured victory with over 24,000 votes, surpassing Labour candidate Praful Nargund, who garnered more than 16,000 votes. This win marks a significant relief for Mr. Corbyn, who has represented the north London constituency for 40 years. At the vote count, Mr. Corbyn expressed his gratitude, said “I want to place on record my enormous thanks to the people of Islington North for electing me for the 11th time.” He continued, “We have shown what kinder, gentler and more sensible, more inclusive politics can bring about. I couldn’t be more proud of my constituency than I am tonight and proud of our team that brought this result. Thank you very much Islington North for the result we have achieved tonight.” The contest in Islington North was highly competitive, with early general election exit polls indicating that the outcome was too close to call. Mr. Corbyn’s campaign faced significant challenges, with his team appealing for a large number of volunteers to counter the formidable Labour campaign machinery. Mr. Corbyn was previously suspended from the Labour Party and barred from standing as its candidate due to his response to an antisemitism report that scrutinized his tenure as leader. Leading the Labour Party from 2015 to 2020, Mr. Corbyn stepped down after the party’s poor performance in the 2019 election. Despite his victory in Islington North, Labour experienced an otherwise successful night, with exit polls predicting a landslide victory for Sir Keir Starmer. Sir Keir’s projected win marks a potential first Labour election victory since 2005, with an estimated 410 seats, more than double the number won under Mr. Corbyn in the last election, translating to an overall majority of 170. Throughout the campaign, Sir Keir emphasized his efforts to change the party since Mr. Corbyn’s leadership. Criticizing Mr. Corbyn’s handling of the antisemitism issue and his manifestos, despite having been part of his top team, Sir Keir distanced himself from his predecessor. In response to Labour’s attacks, Mr. Corbyn has indicated that he may challenge his former colleague if he becomes Prime Minister. He remains committed to advocating for the policies in his manifesto, many of which Sir Keir once supported but has since stated are unaffordable.
