The Grierson Trust in partnership with All3Media, announced the shortlist for the 2024 British Documentary Awards, in which BBC leads with 28 entries, followed by Channel 4 with 23 and Netflix with 17. A new category, “Best Popular Culture Documentary,” has been introduced, featuring entries on internet hoaxes, performance poetry, celebrity scandals, and ’80s pop icons. Mindhouse and BBC Studios top the production companies with five entries each. Fifteen documentaries received multiple category nominations, with “Me and the Voice in My Head” landing in three. Other notable docs with dual nominations include “20 Days in Mariupol,” “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” “Milli Vanilli,” and “Wham.” The Best Documentary Presenter category highlights newer faces in the genre, including Ellie Simmonds, Joe Tracini, and Rose Ayling-Ellis. Lorraine Heggessey, chair of The Grierson Trust, praised the shortlist for showcasing “new stories that cut through in a sea of content.” The awards ceremony will take place on 6th November at London’s Roundhouse.
