Oscar-winning director Orlando von Einsiedel, known for his work on The White Helmets and Virunga, returns with his latest documentary, The Lost Children, set to release on 14th November, 2024. Co-directed by Colombian Jorge Durán and British-Peruvian Lali Houghton, this gripping film tells the extraordinary survival story of four Indigenous siblings and the heroic efforts to bring them home after a tragic plane crash leaves them stranded in the Colombian Amazon.
The documentary follows the harrowing ordeal of four children—ages 13, 9, 4 years, and 11 months—who are forced to survive for 40 days in the dense jungle after their mother and other adults aboard the crashed plane perish. Drawing on their ancestral knowledge, the children navigate the dangers of the Amazon rainforest, while an unprecedented search-and-rescue operation, involving the Colombian Army and Indigenous volunteer rescuers, unfolds.

The Lost Children features first-hand testimonies from those involved in the search, including family members, military personnel, and Indigenous rescuers who risked their lives in a mission fraught with danger. The film combines extraordinary archival footage with personal accounts to illustrate not only the children’s survival but also the cooperation between the Colombian military and Indigenous communities, despite historical mistrust.
Director Orlando von Einsiedel shared his thoughts on the importance of handling such a sensitive subject, said “It’s always crucial to treat stories involving painful human tragedy with the deep respect and sensitivity they deserve. I was drawn to this particular narrative because it was clear that within it were many glimpses of incredible human resilience and strength—not only the children’s battle to survive in the forest alone but also the way in which Indigenous rescuers and the military were able to overcome their mutual mistrust and fear to unite in a dangerous and epic mission to rescue the children.”

Produced by Grain Media in collaboration with Caracol Televisión, Imagine Documentaries, and other major partners, The Lost Children celebrates human perseverance, teamwork, and Indigenous knowledge, unraveling the secrets of survival within the vast, unforgiving Amazon.
The film’s production team include Marta Shaw as producer and a lineup of executive producers, including Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. The documentary’s evocative score, composed by Patrick Jonsson with music consultation from Simón Mejía, further enhances the emotional depth of the story.
