Documentary filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, best known for his work on Ren Faire and Some Kind of Heaven, is taking entering into the world of fiction with his upcoming film Primetime, according to Deadline exclusive report. The project, financed and produced by A24, will have actor Robert Pattinson among its producers, further fueling excitement.
Details about Primetime remain under wraps, but sources indicate the film will follow a journalist who dives into the criminal underworld, eventually transforming the landscape of television. While the studio has yet to confirm, there’s speculation that Primetime draws inspiration from the popular NBC series To Catch a Predator and its host, Chris Hansen. Rumors also suggest that Pattinson might take on a starring role, though no deal has been finalized at this stage.
Oppenheim will direct the film, with the script penned by Ajon Singh. Pattinson produces under his Icki Eneo Arlo banner alongside Brighton McCloskey, Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Fred Berger from Range, and Lars Knudsen, Ari Aster, and Tyler Campellone from Square Peg. Oppenheim and Singh will serve as executive producers, joined by William Iannaccone, A.J. Bourscheid from Range, and Emily Hildner from Square Peg.
Oppenheim’s transition to narrative storytelling comes on the heels of his successful docuseries Ren Faire, which delved into the power struggle at America’s largest Renaissance festival. He also directed Spermworld, an FX and Hulu documentary that explored the world of sperm donation. His debut documentary feature Some Kind of Heaven premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and was produced by Darren Aronofsky and The New York Times.
Pattinson, meanwhile, continues to build an impressive lineup of projects. After starring in The Batman, he is set to appear in Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi film Mickey 17, as well as Die, My Love alongside Jennifer Lawrence, and The Batman Part II.
