Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment are taking their wildly popular Indian streaming series Mirzapur from Prime Video to theaters, as per Variety exclusive report. The film adaptation, based on the critically acclaimed crime thriller series, is set to hit theaters in 2026. Known for its gritty portrayal of power struggles and the criminal underworld in northern India, Mirzapur will mark one of the first Indian streaming shows to transition to a theatrical release.
Series creator Puneet Krishna will oversee the film adaptation, while Gurmmeet Singh, who directed 17 episodes of the series, will helm the project. This move reflects the increasing interplay between streaming platforms and traditional cinema, as studios look to expand their reach and cater to a broad audience.
The film adaptation will feature the original cast that fans have grown to love, with Pankaj Tripathi reprising his role as the formidable Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as the vengeful Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu as the infamous Munna Tripathi. Abhishek Banerjee will also return as the fan-favorite Compounder.
Following its theatrical release, the Mirzapur film will have an eight-week run in theaters before becoming available for streaming on Prime Video in over 240 territories worldwide. This venture follows the record-breaking success of Mirzapur Season 3 on Prime Video, with a fourth season currently in development, slated for production after the film’s release.
Manish Menghani, director of content licensing at Prime Video India, highlighted the significance of the film adaptation, said, “With its nuanced characters, unforgettable dialogues, and riveting storyline, Mirzapur has established itself as one of the most-loved franchises among audiences of today’s era. We take pride in crafting tailored content that reflects the diverse tastes of our viewers… As Mirzapur continues to garner widespread acclaim, we are ecstatic to expand this franchise into theaters, offering fans a thrilling cinematic experience.”
Excel Entertainment co-founders Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, who are producing the film, also expressed excitement about the project, said, “It is a landmark milestone for us to bring the quintessential Mirzapur experience to our audiences, yet again, but this time on the big screen,” they said in a joint statement. “We believe that adapting such a treasured series into a film will undoubtedly make for an even more engrossing watch, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the world of Mirzapur like never before.”
