Oscar winner Bobby Moresco to direct Giorgio Armani’s biopic

Oscar-winning filmmaker Bobby Moresco, best known for Crash, has been appointed to direct a biopic on legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani, marking his latest collaboration with Italian producer Andrea Iervolino.

The project, titled Armani—The King Of Fashion, will chart the personal and professional journey of the late designer, who passed away in September last year at the age of 91. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern fashion, Armani built a global luxury empire and became one of Italy’s most successful businessmen, with the Armani Group estimated to be worth more than $10 billion.

Moresco, who previously worked with Iervolino on racing biopics Lamborghini and Maserati, is also writing the screenplay alongside his daughter, Amanda. The film will trace Armani’s rise from his early career to becoming a dominant force in both fashion and popular culture.

The Armani brand became closely associated with Hollywood, on and off screen. The designer famously created Richard Gere’s costumes in the 1980 film American Gigolo and went on to receive credits on more than 30 movies. Over the decades, his designs were worn on the red carpet by stars including Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts, Jessica Chastain, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Sophia Loren.

Known for his intensely private nature, Armani shared a long-term personal relationship with his business partner Sergio Galeotti, who died in 1985 due to complications from AIDS. It remains unclear whether the biopic will explore his private life or focus primarily on his professional achievements. It is also yet to be confirmed whether Iervolino has sought the involvement of Armani’s family.

Despite the designer’s status as an Italian icon, the production is unlikely to be filmed in Italy. Iervolino has indicated that Hungary is currently the preferred location, citing financial and administrative challenges at home.

According to his production company, “The decision regarding the filming location followed an in-depth review of the investment plan and extensive discussions with the pool of U.S. banks and funds supporting TAIC [Iervolino’s company] Funding, in light of the current Italian production and administrative environment.”

Iervolino, whose previous credits include To The Bone, Waiting For The Barbarians and the upcoming thriller Deep Water, said he also plans to relocate another biopic, Bugatti – The Genius, to Hungary. He claims the combined loss of both productions represents a major setback for Italy’s film industry, driven by recent changes to tax incentives and investor concerns.

A source close to the company said: “The decisions were not driven by artistic or industrial considerations, nor by the quality of Italian talent, but rather by structural administrative uncertainty that has significantly undermined international investors’ confidence…several major American banks no longer consider film productions based in Italy to be financeable, due to regulatory unpredictability and administrative delays and based on a huge disparity of treatment between local competitors based on local relations and not based on law.”

Addressing the issue, Iervolino said: “I am deeply in love with Italy and with Italian identity. Although I am Italian-Canadian, I remain a proud Italian. I will continue to develop projects dedicated to great Italian icons, driven by my profound love for my country. Even if, at this moment, these films will not be shot in Italy, I will continue to tell Italy’s stories to the world by producing them abroad.”

Sources indicate that discussions around Italy’s tax credit system are ongoing at government level, with potential reforms still under consideration. When asked whether he might reconsider relocating productions if conditions improve, Iervolino said: “I can’t answer that at the moment.”

With Moresco at the helm, Armani — The King Of Fashion is positioned as a major international biopic exploring the life and legacy of one of fashion’s most enduring figures.
