Hundreds gathered at Auditorium Shores in Town Lake Park in Austin for a one-of-a-kind Glen Powell lookalike contest. Fans of the Top Gun: Maverick star turned out in droves, impersonating Powell’s various on-screen personas, from his roles in Hit Man and Twisters to the red devil mascot of Torchy’s Tacos and even a canine tribute inspired by Powell’s beloved rescue dog, Brisket. Powell’s mother and aunt, who served as judges, helped crown the ultimate doppelgänger from the eclectic pool of contenders.

Although Powell himself couldn’t attend due to filming Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man in England, he made a virtual appearance via FaceTime, delivering a heartfelt and humorous message to the crowd. “This contest isn’t for me; it’s for Justin Hartley’s lookalikes,” Powell said in the video. “We don’t need masks because we all have the same face. It’s the perfect crime—a criminal Glen-terprise,” he added. He also joked about the unseasonal nature of the event, adding, “If no one is shirtless for no reason, then this whole thing is a sham.”

The actor raised the stakes with an extraordinary prize. “The winner of today’s contest gets a personal prize from me,” Powell revealed. “Now, you may know that my parents make a cameo in every movie I make, but today, the winner wins their parents—or any family member of their choice—a cameo in my next movie. I am completely serious. This is a cash-value prize of $6 billion.” Powell wrapped up his video message with a nod to his roots, saying, “Take a pic together for me, enjoy my favorite city in the world, keep Austin weird, hook ’em Horns, and see ya around every time I look in the mirror.”

The contest, organized by Kate Carpenter, ultimately crowned Max Braunstein as the winner. Braunstein walked away with a cowboy hat, free Torchy’s queso for a year, a monetary prize, and the coveted cameo opportunity promised by Powell.

This whimsical event in Powell’s hometown was part of a broader viral phenomenon of celebrity lookalike contests. The trend began in late October with a Timothée Chalamet lookalike competition in New York City, which even featured a surprise appearance from the Dune actor himself. Since then, similar events have popped up across cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dublin, and London, celebrating stars like Harry Styles, Dev Patel, and Rachel Sennott, among others.
