John Abraham, known for his high-concept action films and gripping performances in movies like Force, Madras Café, and Pathaan, is set to take on the role of Mumbai’s iconic police officer Rakesh Maria in an upcoming biopic. The project, currently in development, will chronicle Maria’s illustrious career, including his efforts to solve some of India’s most significant terror cases. Rakesh Maria, a name synonymous with bravery and meticulous investigative skills, played a pivotal role in solving the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts, the Zaveri Bazaar blast, and the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The biopic aims to showcase his journey from Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) to Director General of Home Guards, delving deep into his innovative methods of tackling terrorism. “Rakesh Maria has been one of the most celebrated cops in the history of Mumbai Police, as he has been the man closely involved in the mission to capture the men behind multiple terror attacks that took place in Mumbai during his tenure from 1981 to 2017,” revealed a source close to the project. John Abraham, who has consistently delivered powerful performances in action-packed narratives, is excited about the role. “He truly believes that the film will be a tribute to celebrate the legacy of Rakesh Maria’s service to the nation,” added the source. The yet-untitled film is in the scripting stage and is expected to go on floors in the second half of 2025. A leading filmmaker from Indian cinema will helm the project, which is described as a gripping cop thriller. The narrative will not only explore Maria’s professional milestones but also focus on his unique investigative techniques. “John is involved in the process of developing this film and is charged up to play the role of the most celebrated cop on screen. It’s a tribute to the real-life hero,” the source shared. Besides the biopic project, John Abraham has two films ready for release, Tehraan, produced by Dinesh Vijan, and Diplomat, a Bhushan Kumar production. Fans are eagerly awaiting more updates on these projects, as well as his transformation into the iconic Mumbai cop.
