Apple welcoming the new year by offering its streaming service, Apple TV+, free of charge during the first weekend of January. From 3-5 January, viewers worldwide can access the platform on any device where Apple TV+ is available, provided they have an Apple ID. Typically priced at $9.99 per month, Apple TV+ will be temporarily unlocked as part of a global promotion reminiscent of free preview weekends once popular among premium cable networks.
The timing of the free weekend aligns with the recent arrivals of new seasons for Bad Sisters and Shrinking, both of which wrapped up earlier this month. The ongoing second season of the sci-fi hit Silo will also be available during the promotion, along with teasers for the highly anticipated second season of Severance, set to debut on 17 January.
This strategic move mirrors similar campaigns by competitors like Netflix and highlights Apple’s confidence in its growing content slate. Launched in November 2019, Apple TV+ has steadily expanded its programming lineup but has not disclosed specific subscriber numbers. Instead, the company reports overall revenue for its services division, which saw $25 billion in revenue for the quarter ending September 30, 2024, and boasted impressive gross margins of 74%.
In addition to its subscription content, Apple TV+ has served as a gateway to other offerings within the Apple TV ecosystem. From rentals and purchases to subscription services and even select free sports programming, the platform has become a centerpiece of Apple’s broader strategy to integrate its hardware and services.
