Renowned Bengali filmmaker Arun Roy, celebrated for his cinematic masterpieces Bagha Jatin (2023) and Hiralal (2021), has passed away at the age of 56. After battling esophageal cancer for over a year, Roy succumbed to a severe lung infection early Thursday morning at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Kinjal Nanda confirmed his passing, noting that Roy had recently been placed on invasive ventilation following a rapid decline in his condition.

Despite his health struggles, Roy’s dedication to his craft remained unwavering. Diagnosed with cancer during the making of Bagha Jatin, he continued to work tirelessly, recently completing Aranyer Din Ratri while undergoing treatment. His resilience and passion for storytelling left an indelible mark on the Bengali film industry.

Born Arunava Raychaudhuri, Roy burst onto the scene with his debut feature Hiralal, a poignant narrative that won him critical acclaim. He solidified his reputation with 8/12 Binoy Badal Dinesh (2022), a stirring tribute to India’s revolutionary heroes. His magnum opus, Bagha Jatin, brought the story of Jatindranath Mukherjee to life, earning widespread praise for its historical depth and cinematic brilliance.

Roy’s mortal remains will be brought to his Haridevpur home at 1 p.m. for his family and friends to pay their respects. Fans and colleagues will have the opportunity to bid farewell at Technicians’ Studio later in the day. The loss of this visionary filmmaker has left an irreplaceable void in the world of Bengali cinema, where his contributions will be remembered for generations to come.
