The UK is bracing for a weekend of extreme winter weather as temperatures plummeted to a bone-chilling -8°C (17.6°F). The Met Office has upgraded its weather warnings, predicting heavy snow, freezing rain, and widespread disruptions across much of the country.

As the icy conditions have already turned tragic, on Thursday night, a seven-month-old baby died after a car skidded and struck a tree on the A1 near Grantham, Lincolnshire. Authorities are investigating whether the crash was linked to treacherous road conditions. A woman in the same vehicle sustained serious injuries, while two others escaped with minor harm.

Amber weather warnings for snow and ice will take effect Saturday evening, covering central England, Wales, and northern England. Up to 30cm of snow is expected in some areas, while others could see 3-7cm. Scotland remains under a yellow warning until Monday, with icy conditions posing significant risks.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather health alert until midday Wednesday, warning of increased demand for healthcare services and higher mortality risks, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those with pre-existing health conditions.

Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, urged residents to stay warm, said, “It is definitely a weekend to turn the heating on.” He defended government cuts to winter fuel payments, assuring that support remains intact for the most vulnerable pensioners.

Friday morning recorded the coldest temperatures of the season, with -8.1°C in Benson, Oxfordshire. Shap in Cumbria (-7.5°C) and Bournemouth airport (-6.7°C) also faced severe frost. Scotland’s coldest point was Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway, hitting -6.4°C.

Meteorologist Dan Stroud cautioned that temperatures might briefly rise over the weekend, but another deep freeze is expected by Monday and Tuesday. “The second half of the weekend should be in the high singles or low doubles,” he explained. “But temperatures will dive again next week.”
