Jeremy Allen White is stepping into the world of Netflix as the lead and executive producer of Enigma Variations, a limited series adaptation of André Aciman’s acclaimed novel. The project, currently in early development, brings White, known for his Emmy-winning performance as Carmy in FX’s The Bear, into a deeply introspective exploration of love and desire.
Enigma Variations follows Paul, a man whose life is marked by consuming and transient loves that mirror the passions of his adolescence. The official synopsis describes Paul’s journey across various settings—from a childhood crush on a cabinetmaker in southern Italy to a New England campus—where a recurring connection with a girl intertwines with anonymous encounters with men. Whether on a tennis court in Central Park or a New York sidewalk in spring, Paul’s attachments are elusive, driven by raw desire and underscored by hopes, fears, and regrets. Yet, the dream of love persists, as the story explores the idea that we may remain enigmas to ourselves and others until we discover our true selves.
White will portray Paul, bringing his depth and nuance as an actor to the character’s complex emotional landscape. Amanda Kate Shuman is attached as the series’ writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Oliver Hermanus will direct and executive produce, alongside Aciman, who will also serve as an executive producer. The series is being produced by Media Res.
Deadline, which first reported the news, highlighted Aciman’s literary legacy. The author previously penned Call Me By Your Name, the novel that inspired the Oscar-nominated film starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
White, fresh off two Emmy wins and three Golden Globes for his portrayal of Carmy in The Bear, is set to bring his star power and artistry to this deeply evocative story. Netflix declined to comment on the announcement.
