After finding renewed success in the digital space with Chamkila and re-releases like Rockstar, Laila Majnu, and Tamasha, Imtiaz Ali is now setting the stage for his next cinematic journey. While cinephiles have been buzzing about his upcoming romantic comedy, Idiots of Istanbul, starring Fahadh Faasil and Triptii Dimri, Pinkvilla has exclusively learned that Ali has another project lined up first—a grand period love story featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. According to sources close to the development, the filmmaker is aiming to begin production by summer 2025. “The casting is presently under way. While the male cast is locked in the form of Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah, the casting for the female counterpart is currently in progress. Imtiaz is looking to cast three actresses from different generations for this yet-to-be-titled period love story,” a source revealed to the Pinkvilla. The film is expected to weave together historical romance with contemporary sensibilities, offering audiences a fresh take on the genre. “Imtiaz has cracked a tale that merges contemporary elements with the period world, and is excited to embark on a journey of discovery with his next,” the source added. Slated for a 2026 theatrical release, the filmmaker is reportedly targeting a Valentine’s Day weekend premiere, provided the cast is finalized in time to begin filming by May 2025. “The idea is to cast actresses apt to bring Imtiaz Ali’s vision to the big screen. The filmmaker is looking to attempt something he has never done before,” the source said. Once he wraps up this ambitious romantic saga, Ali is expected to shift gears to Idiots of Istanbul by early 2026. With two major projects on the horizon, the filmmaker appears ready to captivate audiences once again.
