Real-life sisters Kate and Rooney Mara are set to bring sibling chemistry on the screen for the first time in Bucking Fastard, the latest feature from acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog. The project, which Herzog will both write and direct, is based on the true story of twin sisters Joan and Jean, who lived on the fringes of society, bound by an inseparable bond.

As per Deadline exclusive, the film is set to begin production this spring, with locations in Ireland and Slovenia. Ariel Leon Isacovitch and Agnes Chu will produce alongside Andrea Bucko and Emanuele Moretti of Cobalt Sky Motion Picture Group.

For Rooney Mara, a two-time Oscar nominee, Bucking Fastard follows her role in Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, the 2022 drama that earned critical acclaim. She is represented by WME, Entertainment 360, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Kate Mara, who was last seen in FX’s Class of ’09, is set to appear next in the sci-fi thriller The Astronaut. She is represented by CAA, Mosaic, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.

With Herzog at the helm, Bucking Fastard promises a gripping, unconventional narrative—one fitting for the legendary director known for exploring human resilience and isolation.
