FERNANDA TORRES-LED, OSCAR-NOMINATED BRAZILIAN HIT, SCORES £486,391 AND IS THE BIGGEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OPENING OF THE YEAR

OVERTAKES SALLES’ OWN THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES AS BIGGEST LATIN AMERICAN FILM OPENING

Monday 24 February, London, UK – Altitude are celebrating Walter Salles’s triple Oscar-nominated I’M STILL HERE opening to £486,391 at the UK and Irish box office this weekend.

That figure makes it the highest opening Latin American film in the UK & Ireland, surpassing Salles’s own, THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES, and the top opening Brazilian film since 2003’s CITY OF GOD.

It’s the highest opening for a foreign language film this year and Altitude’s largest foreign language title of all time, surpassing fellow BAFTA nominees LOVELESS and TITANE.

Altitude’s release in 141 sites follows a string of hugely successful festival appearances and a large number of sold out preview screenings in key UK and Irish cities owing to phenomenal demand.

Bryony Forde, Director of Theatrical Sales at Altitude, commented, “We have been on a long journey with Walter Salles’s stunning I’M STILL HERE since acquiring the film at script stage, and it’s been incredible to see it receive such an amazing reception from UK and Irish audiences. Demand for the film has been unprecedented and we have seen a number of cinemas break their own box office records with the release. They have pulled out all the stops to help make the film a success and we are grateful for their ongoing support. With the film’s three Oscar nominations this weekend, we hope to see this powerful and compelling film reach even more people here in the UK and Ireland. Good luck to Walter, Fernanda and all the team behind such a fantastic film!”

Rio de Janeiro, early 1970s. Brazil faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship. We are introduced to the Paivas: a father, Rubens (Selton Mello), a mother, Eunice (Fernanda Torres), and their five children. They live by the beach, in a rented house with doors constantly open to friends.  The affection and humour they share among themselves are their own subtle forms of resistance to the oppression that hangs over the country.  One day, they suffer a violent and arbitrary act that will forever change their lives. In the aftermath, Eunice is forced to reinvent herself and carve out a new future for herself and her children. The moving story of this family, based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s bestselling memoir, helped to reconstruct an important part of Brazil’s hidden history.

I’M STILL HERE has three Academy Award nominations; Best Picture, Actress in a Leading Role and International Feature Film, and was BAFTA-nominated for Film Not In the English Language.  Fernanda Torres won the Golden Globe for Best Actress (Drama) and the film won Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival.

The UK and Irish performance follows the film’s remarkable global box office success. It was the biggest Brazilian film of 2024 grossing over $18,000,000 (USD) to date, making it Walter Salles’ biggest movie ever in Brazil.  In the United States, Sony Pictures Classics’ release has grossed over $4,250,000 and it has pulled in more than $2,200,000 in French cinemas.

Directed by Walter Salles and starring Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello and Fernanda Montenegro, the film is written by Murilo Hauser and Heitor Lorega, based on the book by Marcelo Rubens Paiva. Producers are Maria Carlota Bruno, Rodrigo Teixeira and Martine de Clermont-Tonnerre. Executive Producers are Giulherme Terra, Thierry de Clermont-Tonnerre, Lourenço Sant’anna, Renata Brandão, Juliana Capelini, David Taghioff, Masha Magonova.  I’M STILL HERE also features an original score by Warren Ellis.
