Lily James is set to join Chris Hemsworth in Subversion, an intense new thriller from Amazon MGM that promises underwater tension and action in equal measure. Helmed by 7500 director Patrick Vollrath, the film is gearing up for a September production start in Australia.

Penned by Andrew Ferguson, the story centers on Hemsworth’s character, a disgraced naval commander forced into a dangerous mission after being blackmailed by a powerful cartel. His task: smuggle illicit cargo via submarine through treacherous international waters. The mission takes a turn when James’ character, a determined Coast Guard officer, zeroes in on him, launching a pulse-racing cat-and-mouse chase under the sea.

The project has been described as a “Die Hard on a submarine”-style thriller, with the stakes escalating both inside and outside the vessel. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing under his banner, with Stephen Shafer and Greg Cohen onboard as executive producers.

James, who rose to acclaim for her Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated role in Pam & Tommy, continues to expand her dynamic filmography. She will next be seen alongside Riz Ahmed in Relay, directed by David Mackenzie. The thriller premiered at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival and hits U.S. theaters on August 22.

She also stars in Swiped, a drama inspired by Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd. James not only headlines the project but also produced it through her company, Parodos Pictures. The film is set to premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Currently, James is filming Harmonia, a psychological drama directed by Guy Nattiv. She recently wrapped Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, a reimagining of the cult crime saga, directed by Takashi Miike and backed by Neon.

Represented by UTA and Sloane Weber in the U.S. and Tavistock Wood in the U.K., James continues to stack a slate of bold, genre-spanning roles—this time diving deep into action-thriller territory.
