At Soho Theatre Walthamstow, Brown Girls Do It Too: Mama Told Me Not to Come bursts onto the stage with an audacious mix of stand-up, storytelling, and satire. What begins as a laugh-out-loud sketch show quickly reveals itself to be something deeper: a conversation about culture, consent, and coming of age.

Poppy Jay and Rubina Pabani are commanding presences—equal parts confessionalists and comedians. They take familiar cultural taboos and flip them into punchlines that sting with truth. A bit about auntie WhatsApp groups draws knowing laughs; another, about the loneliness of navigating identity, hits with quiet intensity.

The show’s strength lies in its ability to oscillate between intimacy and performance. The performers break the fourth wall often, drawing the audience into their confidence. It’s less a performance for the audience than one with them.

Occasionally, the pace dips or a sketch feels overstretched, but such moments are fleeting. The emotional honesty and electric delivery carry the production with ease.
