Alia Bhatt signs high-concept drama ‘Housewife’ with Drishyam 2 director

After headlining the spy thriller Alpha and the sweeping romance Love & War, Alia Bhatt is shifting gears with a more intimate project. Variety India has learned exclusively that the actor is set to collaborate with Abhishek Pathak, best known for Drishyam 2, on a high-concept relationship drama titled Housewife.

In the film, Bhatt will portray a housewife in a contemporary story centered on a married couple. Rajkummar Rao is currently in negotiations to play the male lead. While he has expressed interest in the project, the deal has not yet been finalized. If confirmed, the film would mark the first on-screen pairing between Bhatt and Rao.

Beyond starring in the film, Bhatt will also co-produce Housewife through her banner Eternal Sunshine Productions, in association with Pathak’s Panorama Studios. The project is expected to begin shooting around August or September 2026, once Pathak completes work on Drishyam 3, the concluding installment of the Ajay Devgn-led thriller franchise.

Bhatt was last seen in Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala, and continues to maintain a packed slate. She will next appear as a super spy in Yash Raj Films’ female-led espionage thriller Alpha, followed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period romance Love & War. The latter, which also stars Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, is expected to arrive in late 2026 and is said to draw inspiration from Sangam (1964).

The actor is also in discussions for several projects slated for 2027, including Maddock Films’ horror-comedy Chamunda. The film was originally planned to follow Love & War but has been postponed as Dinesh Vijan’s production house revisits its genre strategy after the underperformance of Thamma.

Meanwhile, Rao has a busy year ahead with two Netflix projects and a biopic on Ujjwal Nikam. He is also reportedly set to collaborate with Manoj Bajpayee on a film to be directed by Shoojit Sircar.With Housewife, Bhatt appears poised to explore a more grounded, socially resonant narrative, adding another distinct chapter to her evolving filmography.
