The Wireless Festival has been cancelled after the UK government blocked Kanye West from entering the country, just weeks before he was set to headline all three nights of the event in July.

Festival organisers confirmed the development in a statement, saying: “The Home Office has withdrawn Ye’s ETA [permission to enter], denying him entry into the United Kingdom. As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket-holders”.

The decision was taken by the Home Office on the grounds that West’s presence would not be “conducive to the public good.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer also weighed in, stating that the rapper should never have been invited.

The controversy surrounding West’s booking had been building for days, with backlash over his past antisemitic, racist and pro-Nazi remarks. The situation escalated further as major sponsors began pulling out of the festival, raising questions about its viability even before the government’s intervention.

In response to the growing criticism, West had earlier attempted to address concerns, saying: “My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music”.

The fallout has been widely supported by political leaders and Jewish organisations. The Board of Deputies of British Jews said it hopes that “lessons can be learned across the industry”, while another charity described the ban as “the sensible outcome” following what it called a bruising episode for British Jews.

However, public reaction has been mixed. While some fans backed the government’s decision, others expressed disappointment at the cancellation of one of the UK’s biggest music events.

The episode has also raised broader questions about the festival’s planning and decision-making. Organisers said that “multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance” of booking West, though it remains unclear whether that included local authorities or the Metropolitan Police.

Uncertainty now surrounds the future of Wireless Festival, including its relationships with sponsors and potential contractual obligations. It is not yet known whether West could be entitled to a cancellation fee or if his payment was contingent on performing.

With the festival called off entirely, industry observers say the coming days will be critical in determining both the financial and reputational impact of the decision.
