British actor Anthony Head, whose career spanned more than four decades across television, theatre, radio and music, died on 1 June at the age of 72. Head’s daughters, actresses Emily Head and Daisy Head, announced the news in a family statement, revealing that the actor died from complications related to pneumonia. “He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family,” Emily and Daisy Head said in a statement. The actor was best known internationally for his role as Rupert Giles, the wise librarian and mentor in the cult television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and ran from 1997 to 2003. His portrayal of Giles became one of the show’s most beloved elements, helping establish him as a fan favorite among viewers around the world. In more recent years, Head gained acclaim for playing Rupert Mannion, the manipulative former owner of AFC Richmond, in the hit comedy series Ted Lasso. Throughout his career, Head built an extensive body of work across British and international television. His credits included the role of the Prime Minister in Little Britain and King Uther Pendragon in Merlin, where he portrayed the father of Prince Arthur. Paying tribute to their father, Emily and Daisy Head reflected on his influence both as a performer and as a parent. “It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed first-hand the impact both he and his work have had on so many,” they said. The statement also highlighted Head’s passion for acting and the gratitude he felt throughout his career. “We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues and fans of the shows he was in – he loved his job very much and he always considered himself incredibly lucky to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades.” Long before his television success in the United States, Head first became a familiar face to British audiences through the popular Nescafé Gold Blend advertising campaign. Running from 1987 to 1993, the commercials featured Head opposite Sharon Maughan in a memorable slow-burn romance that became a cultural phenomenon in the UK. Known for his distinctive baritone voice, Head went on to appear in numerous television dramas and comedies, including Motherland, Manchild, Silent Witness, Spooks, Doctor Who and My Family. In 2018, he joined the cast of the long-running BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers, playing Robin Fairbrother. Beyond acting, Head was also a singer and stage performer. He appeared in several West End productions and contributed to musical recordings, including work connected to the acclaimed musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His death comes just months after the loss of his long-time partner, animal welfare campaigner Sarah Fisher, who died in December 2025 at the age of 61. Concluding their tribute, his daughters reflected on the enduring impact of his work. “Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind but we know his legacy will live on in the shows he was a part of and in the audiences that love them.” With memorable performances spanning genres, generations and continents, Anthony Head leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Britain’s most recognizable and versatile screen actors.
