Eurovision star Sam Ryder is set to step into one of musical theatre’s most iconic roles when he stars as Jesus in the forthcoming UK tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. The national tour of the celebrated rock musical will visit Norwich Theatre Royal from 20-24 April, 2027, bringing a new production of the classic show to audiences across the country. Written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jesus Christ Superstar recounts the final days of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas. The musical is renowned for its rock-inspired score, featuring well-known songs including I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar. The touring production follows a successful run in London and reunites the creative team behind the acclaimed 2016 staging at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, which won an Olivier Award. Producer Michael Harrison welcomed the announcement of the nationwide tour, said, “We are absolutely delighted that Jesus Christ Superstar will embark on a major UK tour following the phenomenal response to this extraordinary new production.” The production is directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Drew McOnie and design by Tom Scutt. Harrison said the tour would allow more audiences to experience the production following its London engagements. “This is fantastic news for touring theatre and audiences throughout the UK, ensuring that this remarkable production can be enjoyed by many more people following our seasons at The London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane,” said Harrison. First released as a concept album, Jesus Christ Superstar made its Broadway debut in 1971 and earned five Tony Award nominations, including Best Original Score. The musical later achieved record-breaking success in London’s West End, becoming the longest-running musical in the district’s history at the time with more than 3,300 performances. With Ryder taking on the title role, the latest production is set to bring a fresh interpretation to one of musical theatre’s most enduring and influential works when it arrives in Norwich as part of its nationwide tour in 2027.
