Prime Video’s action thriller The Assassin is continuing its international expansion, with the upcoming second season securing a string of global distribution deals ahead of its release. Season 2 of the series, co-produced by Australia’s Stan and Germany’s ZDF, has been acquired by several broadcasters and streaming platforms that previously carried the first season. News of the renewal was first revealed in February after reports emerged last November that a second season was in development. Among the latest buyers are Canada’s Bell Media, which will air the series on Crave and CTV Drama Channel, and NBCUniversal Latin America, which has secured pan-regional rights for Universal+. Additional acquisitions include NPO (Netherlands), SVT (Sweden), TV2 (Norway), DR (Denmark), Cosmote (Greece), VRT (Flemish Belgium), Hot (Israel) and Sky Free in New Zealand. The latest agreements follow an earlier round of sales for the first season, with rights previously picked up by YLE (Finland), Pickbox (the Balkans), RTBF Auvio (Flemish Belgium), SIA Tet (Latvia), LRT (Lithuania), Freedom Media (Kazakhstan) and Canal+ across the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.Set on a secluded Greek island, the first season followed retired assassin Julie, played by Keeley Hawes, and her estranged son Edward, portrayed by Freddie Highmore, as they were forced to work together while confronting questions surrounding Edward’s parentage and Julie’s dangerous past. The second season, currently in post-production, begins after the pair return from a troubled trip to Berlin. Their relationship has once again fractured following a mysterious falling-out that neither is willing to explain. Julie has resumed life as an assassin while also navigating an unpredictable dating life, while Edward’s honeymoon with Kayla, played by Shalom Brune-Franklin, takes an unexpected turn. The story eventually reunites mother and son as they face Spain’s criminal underworld. Produced by All3Media-owned Two Brothers Pictures, the six-part second season has been commissioned for Prime Video in the UK, ZDF and Stan in association with All3Media International, which also handles worldwide sales. Series creators Harry and Jack Williams return as writers and executive producers alongside Sarah Hammond, Alex Mercer and Daisy Mount. Hawes and Highmore also serve as executive producers, with John Griffin producing the series. Terry McDonough directs the first three episodes and also executive produces, while Sarah O’Gorman directs episodes four through six. Jessica Mescall serves as casting director, and Halo Pictures acted as the service company for the Malta shoot. The latest sales announcement comes as Lisa Mulcahy, who directed the first season of The Assassin, prepares to receive an honor at this week’s Italian Global Series Festival. The event will also recognize industry figures including Natasha Lyonne and Richard Gadd. All3Media International is also attending the festival with Secret Service, the espionage thriller from Potboiler starring Gemma Arterton. The series will make its Italian premiere on 5 July as part of the festival’s International Drama Competition.
