To add to his list of toy characters, Tom Hanks has been cast to play the role of an action figure from the 1960s, Major Matt Mason. The toy was first released by Mattel in America in 1966 and similar to Buzz Lightyear, he is an astronaut who lives on the moon. He was a product of Amerca’s space race and just three years later, humanity landed on the moon for the first time. The script will be written by Akiva Goldsman who previously worked with Tom on The Da Vinci Code franchise – it will be adapted from a short story by Michael Chabon. The project will be produced by Paramount Studios and Mattel Films. As one of Hollywood’s sweethearts, Hanks is busier than ever as he recently debuted his most recent film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. He is also in the process of preparing for his role as Colonel Tom Parker in the Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann.
