With a remarkable global box office collection of $1.38bn (£1.1bn), Barbie has officially become the highest grossing movie of 2023, breaking the record of Super Mario Bros which earned $1.359 billion during its theatrical run. Besides smashing the box office records, Barbie also became the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie and the highest-grossing movie directed by a woman. Directed by Greta Gerwig and staring Margot Robbie as the iconic titular doll, the film was released in theatres on 21st July alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. With a great success of Barbenheimer—Barbie and Oppenheimer—US cinemas crossed the past last year’s total of $3.4bn (£2.7bn). Additionally, Barbie helped the US summer box office to reach the $4bn (£3.2bn) mark for the first time since the pandemic. According to the BoxOfficeMojo.com, so far the biggest hits of 2023 are Barbie topping the list with $1.38bn collection followed by The Super Mario Bros Movie with $1.36bn, Oppenheimer at $853m, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 at $846m and Fast X at $705m.
