The 2024 BAFTA nominations were announced on Thursday. This year’s nominations have four of the six first-time directors including Justine Triet, the only woman director in the category.

In the performance categories, the BAFTA had a surprise element as 11 out of 23 nominees got their first BAFTA Film nomination while Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t get any nominations. Even, Greta Gerwig was too left out of the race.

The first BAFTA film nominations in the performance category were given to Cillian Murphy for ‘Oppenheimer’; Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks for ‘The Color Purple’; Colman Domingo for ‘Rustin’; Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa for ‘The Holdovers’; Jacob Elordi for ‘Saltburn’; Vivian Oparah for Rye Lane’; Teo Yoo for ‘Past Lives’ and Sandra Hüller for ‘Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest’ that shocked everyone as it is the first double nomination for films not in the English language.

Oppenheimer scored big with 13 nominations along with 11 nominations for Poor Things; nine nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest; seven nominations for Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers and Maestro; six nominations for All of Us Strangers and only five nominations for Barbie and Saltburn.

According to the BAFTA official statement, alongside this year’s EE Rising Star nominee Jacob Elordi, six former EE Rising Stars have been nominated including Emily Blunt (2007), Carey Mulligan (2010), Cillian Murphy (2007), Emma Stone (2011), Margot Robbie (2015) and Barry Keoghan (2019).

Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said, “The 38 films nominated by BAFTA voters today span an extraordinary range of genres and stories.  The field this year is incredibly strong. More films were entered, making the selection process particularly tough for our voting members. The films and talented people nominated represent some of the most talked about films of the year, the most critically acclaimed, and films yet to be released and discovered by audiences.”

The 2024 EE BAFTA Film Awards will announce the final results on 18 February.
