Cillian Murphy announces next venture ‘Steve’ with Big Things Films

‘Oppenheimer’ fame Cillian Murphy has announced his next venture ‘Steve’, teaming up with longtime collaborator Alan Moloney. Murphy will star and produce ‘Steve’, marking the inaugural project of his production company, Big Things Films.

The ‘Peaky Blinder’ star is also to debut in ‘Small Things Like These’, in which he stars and produces on the opening night of the Berlin Film Festival.

‘Steve’ is based on Max Porter’s novel “Shy,” which has received the green light from Netflix for global distribution. The film will depict a transformative 24 hours in the life of its titular character, a headteacher portrayed by Murphy, as he navigates the challenges of running a reform school while battling his own mental health issues.

Production for ‘Steve’ is scheduled to commence in the spring, with Tim Mielants, known for his work on ‘Peaky Blinders,’ directing. Porter himself has penned the screenplay, building on his past collaborations with Murphy, including the stage adaptation of ‘Grief is the Thing with Feathers’ and the short film ‘All of This Unreal Time.’

Murphy’s foray into production with Big Things Films comes at a significant moment in his career, following his recent Golden Globe win and nominations for prestigious awards including the Oscar, BAFTA, and SAG Award.

The company aims to produce compelling, story-driven content that challenges audiences and explores universal truths across various genres and formats.

While Murphy will continue to act in projects developed by Big Things Films, the company also seeks to collaborate with diverse talent and partners to bring impactful stories to life on both the big and small screens.
